The name
A regional name. A working trade.
01
Driftless
The unglaciated country around La Crosse — bluffs, coulees and river valleys the ice sheets never flattened. Old ground, left as it was.
02
Tobacco
The trade itself, taken seriously. Cigars, pipe tobacco and accessories chosen by people who smoke them, kept the way they should be kept.
03
Trading
The trade is personal: know the leaf, keep the humidor honest, and remember what your customer reaches for.
The room
Not the office. Not the house. The third place.
Deals get made in rooms like this. So do friendships. The lounge is built for the hours in between — quiet enough to think, warm enough to stay.
Business meetings
A private table, a long clock and no rush.
After work
The hour that resets the day before you go home.
After downtown
The late seat when the rest of Main Street thins out.
The solo reset
One cigar, one chair, no one asking anything of you.
Member nights
Tastings, releases and the people who show up for them.
The humidor
Start with the profile. The brand comes second.
We'd rather ask what kind of hour you have than sell you a label. Four profiles run the house; the names on the bands rotate behind them.
The Opening Cigar
MildConnecticut-shade character: cream, cedar, toasted almond. The cigar we hand a first-time guest and the one regulars still reach for before noon.
Cream · Cedar · Toasted almond — 45–60 minutes
House Medium
MediumThe everyday standard of the house. Habano-leaning, balanced, with baking spice and a clean finish that never overruns a conversation.
Baking spice · Leather · Dried fruit — 60–75 minutes
Maduro
Medium–FullDark, fermented, unhurried. Cocoa and espresso with a sweetness on the lips. An after-dinner cigar for a long table and a longer story.
Cocoa · Espresso · Molasses — 75–90 minutes
The Limited Drawer
VariesSmall allocations, short runs and single boxes that do not repeat. Held back for members first and announced as they land.

The rebrand
Same counter. Longer name.
Briar Patch Tobacco Shoppe has stood in downtown La Crosse since 1976. Driftless Tobacco & Trading Company is what it becomes in 2026 — a full store with a lounge, a membership and a door that stays open longer.

The ledger
Fifty years on Main Street.
La Crosse has been a river town with a tobacco trade for as long as it has been a town. Briar Patch is the thread we actually hold.

Briar
A root that spends a century becoming fireproof.
Every briar pipe begins as a burl at the base of a Mediterranean heath shrub, dug by hand, boiled, and seasoned for years before anyone puts a drill to it. It is the only material that learns the smoker.
